Overview
When PSCS was created in 1994 we were very mindful about what to name the school. We settled on "community school" because of the value we place on having both a strong internal community and connections to the greater community beyond.
The primary success of PSCS is predicated on there being a strong internal community. As such, our hiring policies involve recruiting staff members who first and foremost demonstrate high character and integrity. Similarly, board members not only have to be dedicated to the school's mission and educational philosophy, they need to be good people. Admissions policies center on enrolling whole families, not just students. Our primary focus during the admission process is to look for positive interactions and respect among family members. What this all adds up to is a collaborative community that fosters strong partnerships among the various school constituencies.
A strong internal community attracts and is naturally attracted to the greater community. Because the school allows volunteers freedom, flexibility and responsibility, PSCS is a very popular place for people to give of their time. Community service opportunities abound for students and staff members; in fact, the value of providing service to the greater community is so strong that PSCS supports staff members taking part in service projects even when students aren't interested in participating. The school regularly ventures out to hold activities at remote sites, thus providing students a variety of cultural experiences.
We believe human beings thrive when allowed to explore the world around them with a mind open to all possibilities. A strong internal community creates the structure and confidence that supports people embracing the greater community. Indeed, PSCS is the epitome of a "community school."
