Family
My partner Katie and I live with our two dogs Denali and Kenya in a little yellow house in Bothell. My younger brother lives a mile down the street, and my parents live in Edmonds and Federal Way. My extended family is spread out geographically between Bellingham and Tacoma.
Education
From very early on, my education has gone back and forth between the standard model to unconventional models. I began my formal education at Lockwood Elementary in very typical public school classrooms. In grades 4-6, I was still in the public schools, but in the non-graded program at what is now the Madrona School in the Edmonds School District. (Non-graded program = 3 grade levels, 80 kids, 3 teachers, 2 large open space classrooms with couches, team teaching, no letter grades, etc.) Middle and high school were pretty standard (Edmonds-Woodway HS '96), but in college, I went to Western Washington University ('00) and Fairhaven College (a college within WWU that is very similar to Evergreen.) For graduate school, I took the conventional conservatory route (New England Conservatory, '03). Back and forth it went, and here I find myself again in an unconventional educational setting, only now I am a staff member!
If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?
Right now I would probably pick South Africa -- there is an amazingly large boulder field that has been dubbed "The Rocklands." I would love to spend a year climbing there and traveling around Africa during my rest times.
Which book would you pick to live inside for a week?
Guilty pleasure -- I'd probably pick one of the Harry Potter books!
What things do you enjoy doing when you aren't at PSCS?
Spending time with Katie and the dogs, rock climbing/bouldering, making music, hanging out with friends and family, sitting around campfires, reading, cooking.
What's your favorite concert you've ever attended?
Well, that's a two part answer. 1. Technically I was in attendance, but I was on the stage playing trumpet with the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO. It was the summer season of 2002 and we were in an outdoor amphitheater, it was a warm, clear night and you could see the mountains from the stage. We were playing Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss which is my favorite piece of music -- it is so beautiful, and we played it so well. It was breathtaking. 2. Technicalities aside, my favorite concert that I have attended would probably be the first time I saw Ani Difranco in Vancouver, BC (probably around 1998). The vibe of the whole audience was just amazing, and Ani played a rad set.
